All about New Year's Eve and Oshogasu in Japan, the big Kohaku TV event, and a New Year's Card from us!
Hello again from J-List, where the country is preparing to say goodbye to the current year and ring in the new one. Dec. 31st is a busy day as people rush to get everything ready for the New Year, buying food to make traditional dishes called "osetchi" that are made to keep for several days so housewives can take a break from cooking during New Years, and buying various decorations for the home. It's customary to eat Japanese soba (buckwheat) noodles on the last day of the year, believed to help everyone enjoy long lives, and December 31st is the busiest day for restaurants that serve noodles. But the most important activity that takes place on New Year's Eve is watching Kohaku, the Red and White Song Battle, an annual live show put that's been put on by NHK every year since 1951 in which female singers (the red team) battle male singers (the white team) to see which side can put on the more extravagant performances. The Kohaku show is "the" music event of the year, a veritable institution in Japan's music scene, and virtually every top star will be there from Ayumi Hamasaki to Kumi Koda to Orange Range and enka great Saburo Kitajima (I always make sure to catch his slot). After the Kohaku show ends at 11:45 pm, NHK shows solemn images of people making their way to beautiful Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples and Christian churches (and maybe a mosque?) to do hatsu-mode (ha-tsu MOH-day), the first prayer for good luck and happiness of the New Year, overlaid with the sound of beautiful bells until the display flashes "0:00," letting you know the New Year has arrived.

Rie Fu, a Japanese singer-songwriter from Tokyo gave a wonderful performance in a small London venue at an event called Jpop Go, a night dedicated to Japanese popular music for the UK audience. Although it was a small venue, it was packed full of Jpop fans eager to see the young talented artist perform. Rie Fu had only her guitar and her guitarist Ben on the electric guitar all wired up to a small amplifier, though teamed with her voice that sang so beautifully and naturally it was enough to keep the audience engaged throughout the performance that had a pleasant and calm atmosphere. On the night Rie Fu started off with one her more popular, well known songs, the Gundam theme titled "I Wanna Go To A Place..." she also performed three new songs which I can say are something definitely to look out for, it will be released in her next album that she is currently working on. |

Polysics performed their first show to their UK November tour at the London venue Barfly on 1st November.
The venue was packed with people ready and prepared to have their minds
shaken and blown away by the four piece popular New Wave, Rock band
from Japan.
A nice warm up start came from the Swedish support band for the night
called Quit Your Day Job, teamed with synthesisers and jerky guitars
there was also a wacky vocalist, furthermore a Devo inspired sound
seemed to be present in their music, of course Devo are Polysics's
heros! How appropriate could they be for the night?
Later, after a blast of Devo's music for the break Polysics were soon
armed and prepared on stage, everyone was
ready for take off!

On Wednesday 5th October Rightsscale of Japan and British Underground of the UK presented a Japanese Music Showcase featuring four different bands from Japan. PE'Z, THE RODEO CARBURETTOR and DMBQ were especially flown in for the two shows in the UK that was due to take place at Manchester's The Late Room and London's The Marquee Club. I went along to the London show that featured an extra band, Mika Bomb. The night started off with the "Samurai Jazz" band PE'Z to kick-start the show who were amazing! Never have I seen or heard any Jazz band like PE'Z before. Of course all five members of PE'Z were present including BMW on trumpets, JAW with the saxophone, NIRE – wood base, KOU the man in shades on drums and HZM the incredible keyboardist. (Ex-keyboardist for Shinna Ringo's band, Tokyo Jihen) |
