The Rise of Koda Kumi PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 January 2007

koda1.jpgThere are few pop idols in Japan, let alone the world, who have achieved the kind of super star status that Koda Kumi (倖田來未) has achieved. In what seems a rather humble beginning, Koda Kumi’s name is more popular today then that of the Prime Minister for people between the ages of 13 to 26. And yet with all her success and wealth, she has yet to successfully break into the biggest music market in the world. The United States.

Born on November 13 1982, Koda Kumi was the first girl born to the Koda family in several generations. Her grandfather reportedly taught the bamboo flute and her mother was a skilled Japanese harp player. These subtle influences helped young Kumi develop an ear for music and rhythm.

In her primary school yearbook, Kumi wrote “I want to be a singer when I grow up”. The road was set. The first time she auditioned was during her 3rd grade year of primary school. While attending Kyoto Seika High School, Kumi auditioned with another now popular musical ideal Maki Goto for the 3rd Generation of the Japanese pop group Morning Musume. But she was not selected. In 2000, Kumi won the “Avex Dream 2000” audition held by Avex Trax and was signed to Rhythm Zone, the urban style sub-label of Avex.

She made her debut as a professional singer on December 6, 2000 with her single ‘Take Back’ the single sold poorly and did not make the music charts. Kumi followed up with the single ‘Trust Your Love’ which was also released in the United States. It held the 19th position on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles sales charts and went to number one on Billboard’s Hot Dance singles charts. Over all her debut album ‘Affection’ did not do well.

But instead of going after the American dream, Kumi decided to stay and focus her efforts in Japan.
After several more commercial flops, Koda Kumi kept playing and kept singing. But her first taste of success would be a big one. In 2003, she released ‘real Emotion’ and ‘1000 no Kotoba’ for the Final Fantasy X-2 video game release. The song was huge and Koda Kumi was now officially a star.

Her album ‘Grow Into One’ sold 191,033 copies and lasted 45 weeks on the chart. Her third album ‘Feel My Mind’ was released on February 2nd, 2004 and sold more then 147,000 copies.

koda2.jpg But it was her fourth album ‘Secret’ made her huge. Released on February 9, 2005, the album lasted over 58+ weeks on the charts and sold well over half a million copies. The album had gone double platinum and some her biggest hits including ‘Cutie Honey’ were now on the lips of most high school girls.

To capitalize on the success her record company released ‘BEST ~first things~’, a compilation album in September of that same year. The album has sold more then 1,846,680 copies to date and peaked at number one.

Her second complication album which features a very revealing image of Koda Kumi sitting on a counter drinking milk in her underwear was called ‘Best ~Second session~’. It was released on March 8th, 2006 and as its predecessor peaked at number one on the charts and has sold more then 1,770,110 copies.

A few weeks ago, Koda Kumi released her fifth studio album entitled ‘Black Cherry’.
Her list of awards is impressive:
· January 01, 2006: Won the Grand Prize in the 47th Nihon Record Taishou for her song, Butterfly.

· March 10, 2006: Won Grand Prix at the Japan Gold Disc Awards; "Pop Artist of the Year", "Pop Album of the Year", "Music Video of the Year", and for winning three awards at the event, ranked "Triple Crown".

· May 31, 2006: Won "Best Female Video" for Butterfly, "Best Video of the Year" for Butterfly, and "buzzASIA from Japan" for Trust you at the MTV VMA-J 2006.

· December 17, 2006: Grand Prix Winner of the 39th Nihon Yusen Record Taishou.

· 2006: First female artist to have three singles in the top 10 Oricon weekly chart.

· 2006: Had the highest female debut since Utada Hikaru's "Single Collection Vol. 1", selling 983,000 copies of BEST~second session~.

· 2006: Top most searched person on Yahoo! Japan in 2006!

· 2006: VOGUE NIPPON named Koda part of their Women of the Year 2006!

· 2006: Top seller of 2006 with 12,702,200,000 Yen profit (approx. 106,808,520 American Dollars).

And yet with all the success, Koda Kumi has had little success in breaking into the American Music Industry. Her name is not particularly popular in the West asides from certainly circles (such as J-Pop).

But that seems to not matter in the least. She has sung 27 Theme Songs for films, games, and television shows, has appeared in countless commercials and advertisements including that for Diet Coke and has made a fortune in an industry she seems to love.

However what is most interesting about this pop culture Queen is that when she smiles, it seems genuine. That in itself is a difficult thing to accomplish when you have the power and fame that someone like her has. Indeed the world is her oyster.
