Shaka Labbits
Between You & Me Live Concert Tour 2005
August 2nd - Tokyo Nippon Budokan

"So the (Sadistic Aura) show is at 6:30, doors open at 5:30 and it's 3:00 at the moment. That gives me plenty of time to finish shopping and catch the train to the Budokan,” I thought to myself. After poncing around for ages, I finally reach the Nippon Budokan at around 4:00.

Outside is a mass of people waiting for the show to start, and there is the Budokan in all it's glory with a bright 'Shaka Labbits Between you and me Live Tour' banner slapped across it. Right at the foot of its steps is a small tent selling official band merchandise. "Oooh lucky I came early" I thought to myself, "I can buy some stuff". I walk past the tents and spot the queue. A mass of people line up in a huge block. Then more people. Then more. And more. Walking along the queue to find where it ends, I finally find myself outside the park (where the Budokan is) and out on to the main road, where there are... more people. It must have been around half a km long or something.

An hour and thirty minutes later I'm at the front of the queue, and I reach one of the tables selling stuff.

"Can I have that please", I said in my broken Japanese.
"Sorry Sold out", she answered.
"That?” I asked.
"Sorry, also sold out", she again said.

After buying stuff that I wasn't sure I really wanted, it was time to enter the famous Budokan. Fortunately the doors had just opened.

Entering the main hall, it's glorious presence shined on me. The big stage looked awesome, and a cool giant disco ball hanged from the ceiling shedding shards of light across the arena. Everyone swarmed to their seats, as I fumbled about, looking for mine. I reach the section where my seat is in. "Right, let's see...” I thought to myself while looking at my ticket (jeez i think to myself alot, dont i) "Seat V 48". I look down at the seats in front of me at the foot of the stairs. 'A 1' it read. I start walking up the stairs. Higher, and higher I went. If you would imagine to yourself some really, really long stairs, and at the top of those stairs were even more really long stairs. I was somewhere around there.

For the next hour I waited once again, listening to the obscure Jazzy songs that were blaring out of the speakers, and looking at the stage (which seemed a lot smaller now). Suddenly the lights and music cut and a Shaka Labbits record started playing, two notches louder. The crowd jumped up on to their feet and everyone started chanting. Green lasers flashed across the hall, in a great light display before ending onto the main stage, where it wrote "Shaka Labbits", "Between you and me Tour 2005". Then the lasers vanished and the hall went silent. A second’s pause before lights lit up the hall, and their latest song, 'Sadistic Aura Show' was blared out of the speakers. Everyone went mental, as Uki, Take-C, King and Mah did their stuff on stage.

Their energy and enthusiasm was amazing, and Uki's voice sounded awesome. I was never that much of a fan of 'Sadistic Aurora Show' but their performance made me fall in love with it. A great opener to the concert.

After that came their fan pleaser 'That Thing You Do'. A rock twisted cover of the song by imaginary band 'The Oneders'. The crowd once again went mental, jumping to the awesome sounds pounding out from the speakers. The bass licks from King and the heavy drums from Mah shock the stage and sounded truly wonderful.

Followed after this was some of their lower key songs, but the fans still chanted excitedly and passionate performances during songs like 'It's our secret' and energetic songs like 'So Excited!' really worked the crowd. The lighting was superb and perfectly complimenting the music. Now and then they did their MC part, where I appeared to be the only one not knowing anything that was being said, but I happily clapped, 'Whooped' and shouted 'Uki!!' now and then.

Half way through came their new song, 'RIGEL', a slightly softer song then their usual stuff. More acousticy, slightly calmer and quieter but still with the Shaka Labbits energy. I immediately loved the song and so did everyone else in the hall.

After that the arena went silent, and Take-C the guitarist gently played a soft slow tune on his guitar. Small lights gently lit all around the hall like stars sinking in with the soft melody. Then began one of my favourite songs of theirs, 'Hoshizora no shita de'. From the soft guitar, the song slowly built up with a powerful nursing bass. Uki sang her heart out to give another passionate performance, as the song gently windled back down.

Then after they started playing some of their heavier tracks like 'Jelly Fish' which really got the crowd jumping. Other great performances with songs like 'mommy's back' followed, before they finally left the stage. Ten minutes later they returned for their encore, and returning with just as much energy as they started out with.

After a few songs, they finally ended on what is probably their most famous and most loved track, 'Monster Tree'. The opening riff started and the whole arena erupted. Everything seemed twice as loud as everyone started singing along with Uki. They pounded their instruments and they really worked the stage. A great ending to a beautiful show.

Even though I had a really crappy seat, overall the show was awesome, Shaka Labbits were really energetic and they are an awesome band live. They worked the crowd and they played amazingly together. Without doubt one of the best gigs I've gone to.
