1. Please tell me know your name, or if you have, nickname when writing.

My name is Tario Cham also known on the internet as magurochan.

2. Please tell me your age.

I was born August 6th, 1971 so that makes me 33.

3. Where do you live?

Toronto, Canada.

4. Tell me about your occupation.

I work for one of the largest banks in North America as a Technology
Specialist. I spend my day working with all kinds of technology including the planning of computer and internet related projects.

5. Please let me know your height, weight, and the size of shoes.

I'm 165cm tall, around 55kg, and wear a size 25.5cm.

6. What's your favorite food?

Japanese food of course! I can eat almost everything, even natto! I especially love sushi, katsu curry, and ramen! My favorite food is Japanese sweets. I can eat a choux cream and parfait every day. Once in a while I do eat western food and I love pizza too.

7. What club did you belong to at the high school ?

I belonged to several clubs in highschool, including the track and field, ping pong, and the anime club.

8. If you have some special abilities, tell me about them.

My special ability is being able to take anything apart and put it back together again. I especially like doing this with electronic things and I have a very good understanding of how things work. It's just lots of fun playing with gadgets.

9. If you are compared to an animal, what's it?

I'd have to say a dog. I don't like strangers but I'm very attached to those who are close and important to me.

10. Do you think you are a OTAKU?

I think I am. I'm very passionate about my hobbies and some people think I'm obsessed, but, that's okay. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing the things you love! Personally I think that otaku are a big part of the Japanese economy. They are willing to spend most if not all of their money on anime, idols or any hobby they love. I can't imagine Japan without any otaku!

11. Who is your hero or heroine?

Ichiro Suzuki. When he was coming to the Majors from Japan, many people doubted him and thought he was too small and too weak to succeed. He works harder than any Major League player I've ever seen and he proves that a person can do anything if they give it their best effort. He is also very cool and professional. He makes spectacular plays look easy. I try and go see him play whenever he comes to Toronto.

12. Who is the person that you respect?

The person I respect the most would be my father. He came from a very poor family to Canada and overcame many financial, educational and language barriers to become a very successful and well respected university professor here. He worked hard to give us a good life in and I look up to him for that.

13. Tell me about your dream.

When I was younger, my dream was to marry a cute Japanese girl. Since that already came true, my new dream is to one day live and work in Japan.

14. And your treasure.

My treasure is my wife. She is everything to me and takes care of me like no one else can. I don't know what I'd do without her!

15. What is your favorite proverb, maxim, or a phrase?

I actually have two sayings that I can consider favorites. One is “treat others the same way you want to be treated” and the second is “no pain, no gain”. The first one says that respect goes a long way. If you want others to respect you and treat you well, you must respect them and treat them well in return. And the second saying says that nothing is free in life. We all have to work for the things we want.

16. Whom do you think do you resemble to?

There was a time when people thought I looked a bit like Watabe Atsuro. I think I look more like comedien Yabei Taro now.

17. Is there anything you don't like?

I don't like very cold weather. I don't like people who are rude and discriminate against others or make fun of others for their own personal enjoyment. I also hate getting bad service, which is something I don't worry about too often in Japan. One thing that makes me upset is rush hour on the JR. Everyone pushes and rushes around. I can't stand it when rude obachan push me out of the way. No matter how busy it is here in Canada people always give you your personal space.

18. Is there anything you fear?

Not really. Some people might say they fear failure but, failing is part of life, and if I fail at something, which I have, I hope that I can take some positives out of it and learn from my mistakes.

19. Are you married or single? If single, do you have a girlfriend?

I've been married for 6 years to a wonderful girl from Chiba, Japan.

20. What brought you together?

I was introduced to my wife by my brother who was studying Chinese at a university in Tianjin, China. My wife was also there at the time and they became friends. In 1996 my brother introduced me to my wife when she came to Canada to study English. So I have my brother to thank for making my dream come true.

21. What are you interested in recently?

Lately I've been very involved in building fast computers. I spend a lot of time doing something called “benchmarking” which measures the speed and power of a computer. I belong to a team of what I guess you could call computer otaku at XtremeResources.com where we compete with people around the world to see who has the fastest computers.

22. Who is your most fascinating thing/person for you these days?

These days my most fascinating thing would have to be my new High Definition LCD TV. High definition TV is very common in Japan with BS-hi and BS-Fuji etc, but only starting to be more popular in the West. It has changed the way I watch TV and I find myself collecting more and more HDTV clips of Jpop music performances from the internet.

23. Tell me about what you got angry about recently.

My car started making strange noises when I touched the brakes so I took it in for service. I thought it would be a simple and cheap thing to fix but it ended up costing me $1900.00 (around 150,000 yen). I was not very happy to say the least. I could have spent that money on some Jpop stuff or electronics!

24. And what you were glad about.

We got a new Shiba-inu puppy. His name is Saku and he has taught my wife and I a lot about being responsible. He is so cute and a joy to have around.

25. How do you spend weekdays, and weekends?

During the weekdays I go to work. In the evenings my wife and I relax by watching TV or movies and spending time surfing the internet together. Now that we have our Shiba, Saku, we also spend a lot of time training him and playing with him.

On the weekends we like spending time outdoors if it's not too cold. We also go shopping and to the movies too. I also spend my weekends working on my computer equipment at home.

26. Have you ever been presented in the TV program, or the magazine?

I've never been on TV, but my website has been mentioned in a few newspapers and magazines before. I've also been quoted in a few newspapers including the New York Daily News regarding Jpop music.

27. Imagine that you go to the deserted island, you can take ONE THING
with you...what's it?

I would bring my wife because I would die without her.

28. Imagine that the world were to be the end a week later, what would
you do?

Without a doubt I would immediately head to Japan and eat all the food I could.

29. Please tell me your favorite animation (Japanese and other).

I've got a few favorites and it's hard to choose a number one. Older anime I really love includes Fushigi no Umi no Nadia and Mirai Shonen Conan as well as other Miyazaki works like Laputa and Nausicaa. Some of the more recent anime I really love are GITS Stand Alone Complex, Gundam Seed, Last Exile, Full Metal Alchemist and Initial D.

30. Your favorite game.

I really love cars so my favourite game of all time is still the Gran Turismo series on the PS2. I played the first one so much that I thought my garage was going to run out of room for all the cars!

31. Your favorite comics.

I love sports manga so titles like H2 and Captain Tsubasa are my favorites.

32. Your favorite movie.

My favorite English movie would have to be the first Matrix movie. It was a combination of fantasy and technology which I love with a fantastic concept.
As for my favorite Japanese movie, I would have to choose between Battle Royale which was very cool and Sumo Do Sumo Don't which was hilarious!

33. What do you especially recommend from those above?

I would definitely recommend all the anime I mentioned. Japanese anime is so creative and is not just about the art. The stories and characters are always fascinating and I just love the music, especially for Gundam Seed and FMA. Whenever I start watching an anime with a good story and great characters I just can't stop.

34. Do you use your computer often? Approximately how often do you
use it?

I sit in front of the computer all day at work and more at home so probably around 12 hours a day, maybe even more.

35. And approximately how much do you use the Internet?

8-9 hours a day.

36. Please tell me about your personal computer. (OS, Software, etc...) Do you use DSL, cable or dial-up connection?

I currently use Cable internet.

I have 4 computers at home that I use. One is an Mac dual G4 processors running OSX Panther which I use for graphics and video editing. Second is an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ with two 6800 Ultra video cards in SLI and Windows XP which is my regular desktop that I use for surfing the web, downloading and watching videos and playing games. Third is my laptop which runs Windows XP, I use it wirelessly around the house. And finally my benchmark machine which is an AMD Athlon FX-55 cooled by a Vapochill LS, X850XT Platinum water cooled video card running Windows 2000.

37. What do you think about fan-sub and file sharing?

I have a mixed opinion. I think fan-subbing and file-sharing is great for English speaking fans who have limited or no access to all the great material in Japan. Global Jpop and anime popularity has grown because of file sharing and fan subbing but at the same time it can have a negative impact on sales and of course also brings up many legal issues. The fact is the people who do fan-subbing are not profiting from doing it. They are doing it because they love anime and Jpop and want to share it with others. It's definitely a sensitive issue and it will be interesting to see how it will develop in the future.

38. What kind of websites do you visit frequently?

Mostly computer and Jpop related websites as well as a few sports sites. A few examples from my bookmarks are:

39. Do you visit Japanese sites? If you do, what page is it?

I also visit quite a few Japanese sites for Jpop information and to buy Japanese goods.

40. What is the things, besides Jpop, you like concerning Japan?

I love all aspects of Japanese entertainment and I love all the technology and gadgets that are available in Japan. Another thing I love about Japan is sports. I am a big supporter of Japanese athletes overseas, like Ichiro. Nakata Hidetoshi, Ono Shinji and others. When I visit Japan, I always try and go to watch Sumo and sometimes a baseball or soccer game. My favorite sumo wrestler is Musashimaru. Of course I also love the culture and way of life. The Japanese base a lot of their daily life on respect, using respect words, looking up to those who are senior to you. If everyone else could learn a bit about manners from Japan, the world would be a better place.

41. Do you have any Japanese friends? If you do, where do you see them?

I have a few Japanese friends who I stay in contact with on the internet. We get together whenever I visit Japan. Sometimes they come to Canada for a vacation as well.

42. Please tell me about first impression of Japan.

My first real impression of Japan was when I was 13 years old. I was totally in awe of how big Tokyo was and just how the city seemed to have a life of its own with all the flashing lights and crowds of people. I thought it was so cool, like going to another planet!

43. How frequently do you come to Japan?

I try and go to Japan at least once a year. It's quite a long flight from Toronto but it's definitely worth it!!

44. What's your favorite city or town in Japan?

Tokyo is my favorite but, to be more specific I love all of the stops along the Yamanote JR line, especially Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Akihabara. I also love spending time in my wife's hometown Chiba, it's not as crowded as Tokyo but still has great shopping and lots to do and eat.

45. What's your favorite shop or restaurant in Japan?

My favorite store is Yodobashi Camera. I can spend hours in there just staring at all the electronic and computer goods. My wife usually leaves me there and goes shopping for clothes! I have a Yocamera Point Card that I use every year!

46. What's your favorite Japanese food?

I don't mind lining up to get good ramen. I really enjoy Shinosobaya and a place in Ikebukuro called Gotou. I also love visiting many kaiten sushi places… I love unagi and toro. As I mentioned before I love Japanese sweets so always stop at Cozy Corner on the way home to grab some strawberry shortcake, choux cream and pudding.

47. Do you speak/read/write Japanese? Where/how did you learn?

I can speak and understand much better than I can read and write. I learned a lot from watching anime and listening to Jpop music. I improved a lot after meeting my wife and her family, who I need to use Japanese to communicate with.

48. Or do you have any Japanese word you know/like?

Haha, like any other gaijin, I use the words kawaii and sugoi a lot. I find myself saying mukatsuku whenever I'm frustrated or upset, or tsukaretta when I'm tired at work. When I leave for work I say ittekimasu and tadiama when I come home… I guess that's pretty typical!

49. Did you get culture shock after getting married?

Oh yes! Being a Jpop and anime fan was only scratching the surface. After becoming part of a real Japanese family I learned a lot more about how Japanese people live and think. It opened my eyes to many new things. For example, in the west, most people only take showers. After getting married, I have an ofuro at least every other day and in the winter I cannot survive without a kotatsu. Being married to a Japanese girl has changed me for the better!

50. What made you interested in Jpop for the first time?

When I was 13 years old my parents took my brother and I on a trip to Asia and we stopped in Japan. I saw 19 year old Nakamori Akina for the first time and from that moment I fell in love with Jpop.

51. Did you like music before you knew Jpop? If so, what kind of music did you like?

I didn't listen to that much music before. Western music didn't and still doesn't really stand out for me.

52. What's your favorite music genre? What's your least favorite music genre?

I like pop music because it usually has a good beat and is easy to listen to. I don't really like Western country music.

53. Please tell me your top3 Japanese artists.

54. Why?

I've been following Gocchin since she joined Morning Musume. She's very cute, fun and pretty talented. I think she's quite a good singer and actress. I can't help but adore her smile!

Hirahara Ayaka is a fantastic singer. Her song Jupiter made me fall in love with her vocals. I think she can have a great career as long as she keeps releasing songs that that can showcase her singing ability.

I first heard Tamaki Nami when I watched Gundam Seed and I just loved her songs Believe and Realize. I couldn't believe that she was only 14 years old at the time. Her singing and dancing are very impressive and she always seems much more mature than her actual age.

55. Please tell me your top3 Jpop albums and songs.

Morning Musume - Go Girl! Koi no victory
Hirahara Ayaka - Jupiter
Goto Maki - Scramble

56. Why?

Morning Musume's Go Girl! Koi no victory is a very fun and happy song and always makes me very upbeat. I love the melody and always find myself singing along.

I really love Scramble as it's just a fun and easy going song. I also find myself watching the PV for Scramble over and over because Gocchin looks fantastic!

57. How many CDs and records do you have?

I own about 1000 CDs DVDs and laserdiscs.

58. What title did you buy for the first time?

My first Jpop purchase consisted of 2 cassette tapes; Nakamori Akina's Prologue and Variation, her first and second album.

59. What do you think about CCCD (copy control CD)?

At this point in time, I think it's a waste of money on the part of record labels. No matter what they do someone will figure out how to break the copy control. People will try to copy CDs as long as prices are so high. Labels should try and lower the prices of CDs to motivate fans to buy more. Copying CDs is inevitable, at least for now…

60. How do you listen to Jpop music? (by using your PC or Audio player etc)

I listen to them on my PC and when I'm put of the house I use an iPOD.

61. Do you have any recommendations for me about audio compression format? (mp3 or aac etc)

I still stick with using mp3. With mp3 players getting cheaper and cheaper and also flash storage so cheap, I always rip CD's at 320kbps. I find I can't tell the difference at that bitrate compared to the original CD.

62. Do you encode to make music files by yourself?

Yes.

63. If so, which software do you use?
I use iTunes to encode and organize my music library.

64. Do you have any recommendations for me about pc media player software? (WMP or winamp etc)

I don't think there are any PC media players that stand out right now. Winamp and Windows Media Player are probably two of the most popular but I use the iTunes PC version instead. This way I can also share all the songs on my network with my Mac and PC.

65. Do you have any portable audio player like ipod?

I used to have an MPIO player I got from Yodobashi Camera but I recently followed the hot trend and got an 40gb iPOD.

66. How and where do you usually get Jpop CDs or music files?

When I'm in Japan I pick up most of my Jpop CD's and DVD's in Akihabara. When back home in Toronto I buy online at amazon.co.jp or CDJapan.co.jp. If I just want to try a song first I'll use winMX and download it.

67. Have you ever attended Jpop concert?

Yes, I've been to 4 Hello! Project concerts, 2 Goto Maki musical/concert, and several live TV recordings like Pop Jam at NHK Hall. I love seeing artists or any geinou live. It's a lot of fun, especially seeing their hardcore fans supporting them. The concert experience is very different in Japan from the West. I was so surprised the first time I went to a Hello! Project concert to see the fan club members dance and shout to every song. It's very fun and I do it now too! I've also been to tapings of Karakuri Terebi and Waratte Iitomo!

68. What CD or record do you want most at this moment?

I really want to get Goto Maki's 2004 Autumn concert DVD right now. I love watching her live, she's a fantastic performer!

69. What's difference between US or UK music and Asian one?

I think there are quite a few differences. People seem to take music much more seriously in the west and I'm not saying that as a negative against Jpop. In Japan even idols who can't sing can release singles that people will buy. This is something that could probably never happen in America because the performer just wouldn't be taken seriously, but, that's what makes Jpop so special. There is so much variety and many fans will religiously support even those who can't sing. Morning Musume for example is a lot of fun. In Japan, idols and performers like Momusu get a lot of exposure on music shows and variety TV so that fans, viewers and listeners become attached to the group for more than just their music, but very much for their personalities as well. If Morning Musume came to America I'm sure there would be people interested in them because they are different but, without the same exposure I don't know if they would be successful. I mean, in Japan you can see them on every corner and all over the TV. Another example is Ogura Yuko. She may not be a great singer but she is very cute and a very popular gravure idol so she still gets lot of support. I like her a lot but after she released her first single Koi no Shoobidooba I didn't think her singing career would last, but it has and she gets by with her own unique style.

I also find that in Jpop, there are a lot of artists who start from a very young age. It's not uncommon to see 11 or 12 year old girls becoming idols and pop stars in Japan. It's a lot more rare in the West.

70. What you do you think about best Jpop song in 2004?

Oricon had Hirai Ken's Hitomi wo tojite as the number one song of 2004. It was my wife's favorite song of 2004 but, I really really loved Hirahara Ayaka's Jupiter. It was a powerful moving song and I think I was singing it in my head for months!

71. Jpop CDs and albums are not in much demand for several years in Japan. What do you think about it?

I've noticed the trend. I remember back in the mid 90's when a CD would sell 1 to 2 million copies. That is very rare now if not impossible unless your name is SMAP. I think it's a combination of things. With the growth of the internet, music has become much more available and for FREE! Also if you look at the pricing model in Japan, CD's are not cheap. While in the West the prices of CD's have fallen, an album in Japan is still typically priced at 3058yen…. CD's need to become more affordable.

72. Who is the most promising Jpop singer?

I really like Tamaki Nami. She's still quite young and has a lot of potential to be a great Jpop singer. However, mainstream Jpop in Japan can change overnight. One hit wonders are not uncommon and a Jpop artist who is a star one day can be gone the next. If Tamaki Nami continues to release good songs, not just for anime theme songs but for mainstream Jpop, I think she will do really well. She has a good personality which is also needed to succeed in the Jpop world and she can dance and sing real well. Let's hope that she gets good material to sing.

73. Are you interested in Japanese "Enka"?
I'm not a very big fan of Enka, maybe when I get older!

74. Are you interested in Japanese "Karaoke"?

I love karaoke. It's a lot of fun especially in Japan. It's really a great social activity. It's easy for a whole bunch of friends to just get together and go spend a night embarrassing ourselves in front of each other. With all the karaoke boxes around it's also quite cheap.

75. Can you sing any Jpop song in Japanese?

I have a few songs that I sing regularly including Smap's Sekai hitotsu dake no hana and Kawaguchi Kyogo's Sakura. Of course I can sing a lot of H!P songs also but I'll only do that at karaoke with fellow H!P fans.

76. What do you think about Japanese hiphop?

I think Japanese hiphop has come a long way and is still developing. I'm not the biggest fan but I do listen to lots of Jpop including some hiphop. In Japan hiphop is not just the music but a way of life and fashion style. I think it's become more popular than ever in the last 3-4 years. I really notice it when I visit Harajuku or Shibuya. Shops everywhere are selling the “hiphop” style and young Japanese are really into it.

77. Jpop is unpopular in the West. What do you think about it?

It's hard to say really. CPOP or KPOP is also not popular in the West. I think Jpop has never really gone out of its way to be popular in the West. Japanese culture and trends seem to spread to many parts of the world on their own. Music is one thing that has not become quite as mainstream as say anime has. I can turn on the TV here in Toronto and see lots of Japanese anime now dubbed in English, but, I'll never hear a Japanese song on the radio or see a Japanese music video on TV.

One obvious reason is the language barrier. The West just hasn't been exposed to Jpop's different style. Utada Hikaru recently released an all English album in the West called Exodus. On her album I felt as if she was trying to produce an album that would be more westernized and fit the American Pop style. It was a departure from her Jpop releases of the past. I wonder if she would have been more successful releasing an album with more of a Jpop style here.

78. There arose a vogue for Korea last year in Japan. What do you think about asian songs and culture except for Japan especially K-pop and C-pop?

I spend all my time on Jpop and Japan so I'm not really into Kpop and Cpop but I did notice the growing popularity especially during the Korea boom. With drama's like Tokyo Wankei and actors like Bae Yong Joon, the star of Winter Sonata making appearances all over Japan, Korean culture was hotter than ever last year.

79. Old songs are popular taking advantage of a revival boom for several years in Japan. What do you think about it?

It's good that old songs can make a comeback. For me there are lots of good songs from the 80's and 90's that I still love listening too. I also noticed that many Jpop artists are doing remakes of older songs. I think it is okay to remake popular old songs. This allows the younger generation to experience songs that were popular before their time, sung by their current idols and stars. I think Jpop singers should always have their own original material but a good remake here and there is good to bring back old memories. Persoanlly, I enjoyed Ichikawa Yui's remake of Moritaka Chisato's Ame. I still listen to Rebecca, Wink and Minamino Yoko once in a while!

80. Topics of plagiarism often come up on radio and TV. What do you think about it? 　And What do you think that Natsumi Abe plagiarized from other's lyrics.

Plagiarism is a terrible thing but is something that always has to be dealt with in any creative medium. The Nacchi incident was very unfortunate. I think she made a very big mistake that could severely damage her career, if it hasn't already. I also partially put the blame on her management. They should have been more careful to not let something like this happen. Japan is a country where saving face and honor mean a lot and it will definitely be a while before Nacchi is forgiven.

81. When did you open your web site?

I started my site back in 1996 as T's Kawaii Jpop Stuff.

82. What made you interested in making the site for the first time?

When I first started the site it was just a personal homepage featuring artists and idols like Amuro Namie, Uchida Yuki, Kanno Miho and others. I thought a website would be a good way for me to share my love of Jpop with others. I didn't think that anyone outside of Japan would know who Enamoto Kanako or Mochida Maki was, so I wanted to introduce all these idols.

83. How was feedback or reacton from the visiters?
Visitors loved the site because it was in English and they could read what I wrote about all these interesting idols and performers. Many visitors would se me emails thanking me for introducing them to their favorite performers or idols. I'd like to think that I helped introduce Ogura Yuko to many English speaking fans when I first featured her on my site over 3 years ago.

84. How is Jpop.com operated presently?

It has always been and still is a one person operation. I take care of all the technical aspects as well as design and content. I do have several volunteers who are big Jpop fans help me out as moderators on the BBS and with articles once in a while. It's a lot of work, and a lot of times too much for me to handle.

85. Do you have interaction with other Jpop fans?

The Jpop.com BBS/Forum has over10,000 members who chat everyday about Japanese music, idols, entertainment, culture and language. We all share our experiences and love for Japan there.

86. What is the moment/situation that you feel the best, that you're the most glad?

I'm glad if I can help someone enjoy Jpop or Japan more. I love giving advice about traveling to Japan and helping someone have a good time.

87. What do you think is the most important thing to be Jpop-fan?

I think the most important thing is just to have fun and enjoy Jpop. There are many fans of all different kinds of artists out there and the best thing to do is to keep an open mind and respect fans and their choice of who they support. Everyone has their own reasons but in the end we all love Japan and Jpop.

88. Jpop.com looks very sophisticated. Did you make your site on your own?

I learnt how to write PHP and mySQL from building Jpop.com. It's a lot of work but also very satisfying. I'm stuck in the middle of a re-design now. My personal life and other obligations have taken me away from the site for quite a few months but I hope to find time to finish it soon.

89. Could you introduce each corner on your website briefly?

The newly redesigned site will feature Jpop music reviews and articles as well as articles about Japanese culture. A popular section of the site is Kuri's Korner http://www.jpop.com/kuri/ Kuri is an American girl who I became friends with. She now lives in Japan and writes about her experiences in her Korner. The most active section of the site is the Forum http://www.jpop.com/jforum/ where visitors register to take part in discussions about Japan and Jpop. We've also got a penpal or friendship section at http://friends.jpop.com/ where visitors can become penpals and friends with people from all over the world who are interested in Japanese culture.

90. Please explain "Jpop.com radio".

Jpop.com radio is an occasional radio show that we do using Shoutcast, an audio streaming program. We play recent Japanese hits and have contests giving away prizes like Jpop CD's, DVD's and posters. A really popular feature of the radio show is our Jpop Karaoke contest. Members of the website sing popular Japanese songs to win prizes as voted by the listeners. It's amazing how good many English speakers are at singing Japanese songs!

91. Please describe Jpop scene in your country. The popularity, its image, etc…

Unfortunately the Jpop scene is not very big in Canada. There are more and more Japanese anime on TV but music still has trouble becoming popular here. People still think of Japan as cars and electronics here.

92. Which Jpop-fan sites do you like?

I really like http://www.gocchin.com/ as it has all the latest English information about Goto Maki and has a fantastic design. I also think http://www.j-fan.com/ has a really informative site. They provide a lot of info about Japanese entertinment. Another good site for Japanese drama is http://www.d-addicts.com/.

93. Do you watch Japanese TV program?

My favorite actress would have to be Yada Akiko. Her big eyes and pretty face always make any drama enjoyable! Two younger actresses who I think will have great careers are Ikewaki Chizuru and Ishihara Satomi. They are both fantastic actresses.

95. What's your favorite Japanese brand (sony and toyota etc)?

My favorite brand would have to be Sony. They never fail to come out with cutting edge products and always make things of good quality. Sometimes their items are more expensive than others but I don't mind paying a premium to get good quality. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on the new Sony PSP, it looks like it is going to be another big winner for Sony the way PS2 was.

96. Who is the most recommended singer in the world?

This is a tough question. It would be difficult to recommend just one but I think if I was to recommend an artist to someone new to Jpop it would be Morning Musume. There are a lot of interesting personalities in the group and lots of fun songs that listeners can easily love. I think Momusu has helped a lot of English speakers become Jpop fans over the last 5 years or so along with Amuro Namie, Hamasaki Ayumi and Utada Hikaru. Anyone of those artists would be a good recommendation.

　名前は、タリオ・チャンといいます。ネット上では、magurochan（マグロチャン）で通ってます。

　1971年8月6日生まれの33歳です。

3．どこにお住まいですか？

　カナダのトロントです。

4．職業について教えてください。

　北米ではかなり有名な銀行の技術者として勤めてます。コンピュータやインターネットに関係したプロジェクトなど、技術に関するあらゆることを手がけてます。

5．身長、体重、靴のサイズは？

　身長は165cm、体重は大体55kg、靴は25.5cmです。

6．好きな食べ物を教えてください。

　もちろん日本食ですね。納豆でも、なんでも食べますよ。特に寿司、カツカレー、ラーメンがお気に入りです。ほかに、甘いものも大好きですね。シュークリームやパフェなら毎日でもいいですよ。まあ、たまにはピザなどのアメリカンフードも好きですけどね。

7．高校のときの部活は何をしていましたか。

　高校では、陸上、卓球、アニメといったクラブをしてました。

8．なにか特技があれば教えてください。　

　特技は、バラバラに分解したものをもう一度組み立て直すことです。特に電子関係のものは、よく知っているので分解したり組み立てたりするのは好きですねぇ。単なる趣味で分解したりもしますよ。

9．自分を動物にたとえるなら、なんですか。

　犬でしょうね。見知らぬ人は嫌いだけど、近くにいる大切な人にはとてもなつくといったところが。

10．自分をオタクだと思いますか？

　はい、思いますね。趣味に関しては非常に情熱的で、何かに取り付かれているんじゃないかというひともいますけど、まあいいですよ。好きなことをしているだけで、なにも悪いことをしているとは思いませんから。個人の意見としては、「オタク」は、日本経済の中でとても大きな位置を占めていると思いますよ。彼らは、自分の好きなアニメやアイドルなんかに、全部とは言いませんが、ほとんどのお金を注ぎ込んでいるわけですから。オタクのいない日本なんて想像できませんよ。

11．あなたにとってのヒーローまたはヒロインは誰ですか。

　イチロー選手です。彼が日本からメジャーに来たとき、多くの人たちが彼の実力を疑問視し、体が小さくて力が弱いので、メジャーで成功することは難しいと思ってました。でも、彼は私が見てきたどのメジャーリーガーより努力人だと思います。そして彼は、最善の努力をすれば、人はなんでも出来るということを証明してくれました。また、彼はクールでとてもプロフェッショナルで、すごいプレーをいとも簡単にしてしまいます。彼がトロントへ来るときはいつも、スタジアムへ足を運ぶようにしています。

　一番尊敬している人は、父親です。私の父は、貧しい家庭で育ち、カナダへ移住してから経済的、学問的、言語的ハンデを乗り越えて成功しました。今では、大学教授をしています。私たちのより良い生活のために一所懸命働いてくれて、とても感謝してます。

13．あなたの夢について教えてください。

　若い頃は、かわいい日本人の女の子と結婚することでした。でもその夢はかなったので、次の夢はいつか日本で働くことです。

14．あなたの宝物について教えてください。

　妻です。彼女は、私にとってすべてです。彼女は、世界で一番、私を大切にしてくれるので、彼女のいない人生は考えられません。

15．座右の銘は？

　2 つ好きなことわざがあります。ひとつは、「己の欲せざるところを他に施すなかれ」で、もうひとつは「痛みなくして得るものなし」です。最初のことわざは、「尊敬」が成功のカギという意味だと思います。もし、人に尊敬されたければ、同じようにその人を敬わなければなりません。ふたつめの格言は、人生にタダなものはない、欲しいものがあれば働かなければならないということです。

16．自分に似ている人っていますか？

　昔、渡部篤郎に似ているって言われたことはあります。今は、コメディアンの矢部太郎に似てると自分では思ってますが……。

※矢部太郎：お笑いコンビ「カラテカ」所属。以前、日本テレビ「電波少年」でスワヒリ語や韓国語をマスターした驚異の語学芸人としても知られている。

17．キライなモノはなんですか。

　まず、寒いのはあまり好きではないですね。あと、他人に対して無礼で差別的な人や、笑いのネタにする人も好きじゃないです。あと、サービスが悪いところも嫌いです。例えば、JRのラッシュアワーですね。押し合いへし合いで、特に失礼なオバチャンがわれ先と入ってくるのは我慢できません。カナダなら、いくら急いでいてもそんなことはしませんよ。

18．怖いモノはなんですか。

　特にないですね。人によっては、失敗を恐れているなんてひともいるかもしれませんが、それも人生の一部です。もし私が何かに失敗したら、失敗をポジティブに考えて、間違いから何かを学ぼうとしますね。

19．彼女、もしくは奥さんはいますか？

　はい。千葉県の四街道出身の素敵な女性と結婚して6年になります。

20．知り合ったきっかけは？

　私の兄が中国の天津に留学していたとき、彼女も中国に留学していたんですよ。その後、彼女がカナダに留学に来たとき、兄に紹介してもらったのがきっかけです。だから、私の夢をかなえてくれた兄にとても感謝してますね。

21．最近関心あることってなんですか。

　最近は、速いコンピュータを自作すること、いわゆるベンチマークテストというマシンパワーをテストすることに時間を費やしてます。私は、 XtremeResources.comという（まあ、いわゆるオタク集団なんですが）集団に所属していて、そのホームページ上で世界中の人々と最速マシンを自慢し合ってます。

22．最近ココロ動かされるモノ・人について教えてください。

　近頃、デジタルハイビジョンに魅かれますね。デジタルハイビジョンは、日本ではBS-iやBS FUJIで一般的かもしれませんが、こちらでは始まったばかりです。このごろは、ネットでJpopの音楽クリップを探すときもデジタルハイビジョンのものを探すようになりましたね。

23．最近腹がたったことってなんですか？

　私の車が、ブレーキを踏むと変な音を立てるようになってしまったので、修理に出したんですよ。最初は、簡単な修理で直ると思っていたら、1,900ドル（日本円でおよそ 200,000円）もかかってしまったんです。ほんと最低ですよ。それがなかったら、Jpopや新しい電化製品を買えたのに！！

24．最近うれしかったことってなんですか？

　柴犬を飼いはじめました。名前は「サク」で、しつけは妻がしてます。とってもかわいくて、まわりを楽しませてますね。

25．平日、休日の過ごしかたを教えてください。

　平日の昼間は仕事へ行き、夜は妻と一緒にテレビや映画を見てリラックスしたり、ネットサーフィンをしてます。また、柴犬のサクと一緒に過ごす時間も最近は多いです。

26．テレビや雑誌に出たこと、ありますか。

　テレビに出たことはないですが、Jpop.comは、何度が新聞や雑誌で紹介されたことがあります。また、サイト上のJpopについてのコメントがNewYork Daily Newsなどに掲載されたこともあります。

27．無人島にひとつだけもっていけるものがあるとしたら、なにがいいですか。

　妻ですね。だって、妻なしでは生きていけないですから。

28．来週世界が終わるとしたら、なにをしますか？

　間違いなく、すぐ日本に行って食べられるだけ好きなものを食べますね。

29．好きなアニメ作品について教えてください。

　お気に入りがいくつかあって、ナンバーワンを選ぶのは難しいですね。昔の作品ですと「ふしぎの海のナディア」や「未来少年コナン」は本当に好きでした。あと、宮崎アニメの「天空の城ラピュタ」や「風の谷のナウシカ」も同じくらい好きですね。最近のアニメですと、「攻殻機動隊 STAND ALONE COMPLEX」、「ガンダムSEED」、「LAST EXILE」、「鋼の錬金術師」、「頭文字D」といったところが好きです。

※攻殻機動隊 STAND ALONE COMPLEX：士郎正宗原作「攻殻機動隊」のTVアニメ版。大ヒットした劇場アニメ「GHOST IN THE SHELL 攻殻機動隊」がベースとなっている。

　私は、車がとても好きなので、常にPS2のグランツーリスモシリーズがお気に入りですね。最初のシリーズなんか、ガレージが車でいっぱいになるんじゃないかと思うほど熱中しましたね。

31．好きなマンガは？

スポーツマンガが好きで、「H2」や「キャプテン翼」が特にお気に入りです。

32．好きな映画は？

　ハリウッド映画だと、（一番最初の）マトリックスですね。私の好きなファンタジーとテクノロジーのコンビネーションが良かったです。日本映画だと、とてもクールな「バトル・ロワイアル」と、とてもユーモラスな「シコふんじゃった。」のどちらかを選ぶでしょうね。

33．これらのうち、いちばんオススメなのはなんですか。

　オススメは、29.で答えたアニメですね。日本のアニメはとてもクリエイティブなうえ、単なるアートになっていない。ストーリーやキャラクターが常に魅力的で、なおかつ音楽もすばらしい。特に、「ガンダムSEED」や「鋼の錬金術師」の音楽は絶品です。そのような素晴らしいストーリーとキャラクターが出てくるアニメを見始めると、いつも止まらなくなりますね。

34．パ�#092;コンは、よく使いますか？　どれくらい使っていますか。

　会社にいるときは、一日中コンピュータの前にいて、さらに家でも使っているので12時間、もしかしたらそれ以上かもしれません。

35．インターネットはどれくらい？

　一日に8、9時間ですね。

36．あなたが使っているパ�#092;コンについて教えてください。ＯＳや�#092;フトなど。回線はＡＤＳＬ、ケーブル、ダイヤルアップのうちどれ？

　今は、ケーブル回線に繋いでます。

　家には、4台のコンピュータがあります。ひとつはマックで、デュアルG４にOSXをインストールしたもの。おもに、グラフィックやビデオ編集に使ってます。2台目がAMDのAthlon64、3500＋に6800のグラフィックボード2枚挿しで、SLI接続して使ってます。OSは、WindowsXPでこのコンピュータをメインマシンとして、ネットサーフィンやダウンロード、ビデオ鑑賞やゲームなどに使ってます。3台目が、ワイヤレスLANに繋いで使っているノートパ�#092;コンで、これもXP入れて使ってます。4台目が、ベンチマーク専用機で、Vapochill LS搭載のAthlonFX-55に、X800XT Platinum water ビデオカードで、Windows2000を走らせています。

※Vapochill：デンマークのAsetek社によるガス冷却システムで、キャンピングカーなどで利用されている冷却システムを利用している。実際の写真はこちらから。水でパ�#092;コンを冷やす水冷システムがかわいく思えてきます。

37．ファンサブやファイル共有については、どう思いますか。

　うーん、複雑ですねぇ。ファンサブやファイル共有は、日本のものを入手しにくい環境にいる人々にとっては、素晴らしいものです。Jpopやアニメ人気は、ファイル共有やファンサブのおかげで成長し続けている反面、正規版のセールスに悪影響を及ぼし、法律的にも多くの問題があるのも事実です。でも実際、ファイル共有を行なっている人たちは、それで利益を得ているわけではなく、純粋にJpopやファイル共有を愛し、みんなで共有したいと思っているわけです。まあ、とてもデリケートな問題ですが、この先どうなっていくかというのはとても興味がありますね。

38．よく行くサイトってどんなところですか。

　大抵は、コンピュータやJpopに関係するサイトですね。あとスポーツ関連のサイトも行ったりします。私のお気に入りの中からいくつかピックアップしてみます。

　日本のエンターテイメントに関することや、テクノロジーや日本で手に入る家電商品などは全部好きですね。ほかには、日本のスポーツも好きです。海外で活躍している日本人プレイヤー、特にイチローや中田、そして小野の大ファンです。日本に行くときは、いつも相撲へ行ったり、また野球やサッカーなども観に行くようにしてます。好きな力士は、武蔵丸ですね。
　もちろん、日本の文化や生活様式も好きです。日本人は、日々の生活が「尊敬」というものの上に成り立っています。それは、敬語を使うことや、目上の人を敬うといったことにあらわれています。もし、世界中の人たちが、日本的なマナーを少しでも学べば、世界はもっと良くなると思います。

41．日本人の友達はいますか？　

　インターネットで連絡を取り合っている友達が数人います。日本に行くときはいつも会うようにしてますね。ときどき、彼らも休暇中にカナダに来ることもあります。

42．日本に初めてきたときの印象は？

　一番最初に日本へ行ったのは13歳の時でした。東京という街はどんなに大きく、そして、常にライトが照らされて込み合ったこの街で、人々はどうやって生活しているのかと思うと、完全にその街が怖くなりましたね。でも、別の惑星に来たと思うほどとてもカッコよく思いましたね。

43．どのくらいの頻度で日本には来ますか？

　1年に一度は、行くようにしてます。トロントからだと、フライト時間が非常に永いですが、それだけの価値はあると思ってます。

44．日本で好きな場所は？

　東京が好きですが、より具体的に言うと山手線の駅、特に原宿、渋谷、新宿そして、秋葉原が好きです。また、妻の実家である千葉で過ごすのも好きですね。東京ほど混雑はしてないですけど、買い物をしたり食事をするには良いところですよ。

45．日本でお気に入りのお店は？

　ヨドバシカメラですね。家電やコンピュータ売り場なら何時間でも居られますね。ここへ行くと、妻は大抵私から離れて、洋服売り場へ行ってしまいますね。あと、ポイントカードも持っていて、毎年行くたびに使ってますよ。

46．お気に入りの和食は？

　おいしいラーメンが食べれるなら、行列に並ぶのは気にならないですね。「支那そばや」や池袋の「ごとう」は特にお気に入りです。
　また、回転寿司も好きですねぇ。特にウナギやトロが。あと、最初に言ったように日本のスイーツも大好きで、コージーコーナーへ行って、持ち帰りでショートケーキやシュークリーム、プリンなどを買いますね。

※支那そばや、ごとう：食材の鬼として知られる店主佐野実で有名な「支那そばや」に大勝軒の味を受け継ぎ、常に行列が絶えない池袋の「ごとう」。ほんとに日本のことをご存知で。

47．日本語の読み書き、会話はできますか。それはどこで勉強したのですか

　読んだり書いたりするより、会話のほうが得意ですね。ほとんどは、アニメやJpopから学びましたね。結婚してからは、妻や妻の家族とコミュニケーションをとる度に、日本語力がアップしてますね。

48．知っている、または好きな日本の単語を教えてください。

　ハハ（笑）……、ほかの外人使っているように、かわいいやスゴイもよくつかいますねぇ。いらいらしたときは、「ムカツク」、疲れたときは「ツカレタ」、家を出るときは「イッテキマス」、帰ってきたら「タダイマ」……って、超典型的なパターンですよね。

49．日本人の奥様と結婚して、カルチャーショックを受けましたか？

　もちろん! Jpopやアニメ好きだったときは、ほんとに上辺を見ていただけで、日本人家族の一員になったことで、日本人が本当はどう生活しているか、また彼らが本当はどう考えているかを、たくさん知りました。新しいことを知るたびにほんと目から鱗が落ちっぱなしでした。例えば、普段はシャワーを浴びるだけでしたが、今では、少なくとも2日に一度はお風呂に入りますし、コタツなしではもう暮らせません。妻にかなり影響を受けっぱなしですね。

50．日本の音楽に興味をもった最初のきっかけは何ですか。

　13歳の時に、両親が兄と私を連れてアジアを旅行し、途中日本に立ち寄りました。そのとき、19歳の中森明菜を初めて見て、その瞬間Jpopに恋しました。

51．もともと音楽は好きでした？　どんなものを聴いてました？

　それまで、そんなに音楽は聴きませんでした。欧米の音楽も聞いてませんでしたし、今もそれほど聞きませんね。

52．音楽で好きなジャンル・嫌いなジャンルについて教えてください。

　気持ちのいいビートで気軽に聞くことができるので、ポップミュージックが好きですね。カントリー音楽などは、あまり好きではないですね。

54．理由は？

　モーニング娘。に加入したときから、ごっちんを追いかけています。彼女は、とてもキュートで、面白く、とても才�#092;があると思います。歌手としても女優としても素晴らしいですね。彼女の笑顔を見ていると、崇めずにはいられませんね。

　平原綾香は、素晴らしい歌手です。「Jupiter」を聞いて彼女の声に恋しましたね。彼女の�#092;力を発揮できるような歌をリリースし続ける限り、すごいキャリアを築くことができると思ってます。

　「ガンダムSEED」を見たとき初めて玉置成実の「Believe」と「Realize」を聞きました。そのとき、彼女が14歳とは信じられませんでしたね。彼女の歌とダンスはとても印象的で、実際の年齢よりもかなり大人っぽく見えますね。

　モーニング娘。の「Go Girl～恋のヴィクトリー～」は、楽しくハッピーな曲で、聞くたびに明るい気分にしてくれます。メロディが特に好きで、いつも自然と一緒に歌ってますね。

　後藤真希の「Scramble」は、楽しく気楽な曲でとても好きです。ＰＶも何度も何度も見てます。

57．CDとレコードはあわせて何枚くらいもっていますか。そのうち、日本のものはどれくらいありますか。

　だいたい1,000枚くらいCD、DVD、LDを持ってますね。

58．あなたが初めて買ったレコード、CDは何ですか？

　初めて買ったのは、中森明菜の2つ入りのカセットテープです。タイトルは、「Prologue」（ファーストアルバム）と「Variation」（セカンドアルバム）です。

59．CCCD(コピーコントロールCD)についてどう思いますか？

　現時点では、レコード会社にとってお金の無駄使いでしょうね。彼らがどんなことをしても、誰かがそのコピーコントロールを破ってしまうでしょうから。ＣＤの値段が高い限り、人々はコピーをやめないでしょうね。レコード会社は、ファンがもっと買おうと思う値段設定にするべきだと思います。ＣＤのコピーは、なくならないでしょうね、少なくとも今は……。

60．どのような方法で音楽を聴いていますか？

　家の中ではＰＣで、外ではiPodを使ってます。

61．オススメの音楽圧縮形式は？

　私は、今もMP3を使ってますね。MP3プレイヤーも、フラッシュメモリーもだんだん安くなってきたので、いつもエンコードするときは、320kbpsに設定してます。これだと、オリジナルのCD音源と全然区別がつきませんね。

※通常のエンコード�#092;フトのデフォルト設定は、128kbpsであることが多いので、320kbpsはかなり高音質な設定。

　はい。

　現時点では、とくにこれと言ったメディアプレイヤーは、ないと思いますね。WimampとWindowsMediaPlayerが特に人気だとは思いますが、私はiTunesのＰＣバージョンを使ってます。これだと、LAN上のMacとWindows両方で曲を共有しあうことができるので。

※iTunesVer4.5以降を実行しているコンピュータ同士で、ローカルネットワークを介してiTunes上のライブラリやプレイリストを共有し合うことができる。

65．iPodなど携帯プレイヤーは使います？

　以前は、ヨドバシカメラで買った「MPIO」を使ってましたが、最近、流行のiPod（４０ＧＢ）を買いました。

66．日本の音楽作品を入手するのは難しいと思いますが、どこで買っていますか？

　日本に行くときは、秋葉原でJpopのCDやDVDを買ってます。トロントに居るときは、amazon.co.jpやCDJapan.co.jpで買いますね。もし、1曲だけをすぐに聞きたいと思うときはWinMＸを使って落としますね。

67．日本のアーティストのライブに行ったことはありますか？

　ハロプロのコンサートに4回、後藤真希のコンサートには2回、NHKホールでの「ポップジャム」公開録画にも何度か行ったことがあります。実際にアーティストや芸�#092;人を見に行くのは楽しいですね。また、彼らを応援するコアなファンを見るのは特に興味深いですよ。日本のコンサートは、こちらのとはかなり異なるので、初めてハロプロのコンサートに行ったとき、ファンクラブのメンバーがどの歌でも揃った掛け声をしているのを見たときは、特に驚きましたね。でもとても楽しいですね。今では、私もできますよ。
　あと「さんまのからくりテレビ」や「笑っていいとも！」の公開収録にも行ったことがあります。

※コンサートはともかく、ポップジャムの公開録画や、さらにバラエティ番組の公開収録にも行ったことがあるとは！　スゴすぎです。

68．今一番欲しいレコードやCDはありますか？

　一番欲しいのは、後藤真希の2004ツアーDVDですね。彼女のライブはホントにいいですよ。彼女は、ファンタスティックなパフォーマーですね。

69．日本の音楽はアメリカやイギリス、またほかのアジア各国のものとどこが違いますか。

　私は、大きな違いがいくつかあると思っています。まず、西の人々のほうが、音楽に対してシリアスに取り組んでいると思います。それは、Jpopに対してネガティブな意味で言っているわけではないです。日本では、歌がうまくないアイドルですら人々が買うようなシングルＣＤをリリースすることができます。これは、アメリカでは考えられないことです、なぜなら、そのタレントは、真剣に受け止められないからです。でも、それことがJpopがしている「特別」なことなんです。
　そこにはすごい多様性が生まれ、多くのファンが歌を歌えないタレントでさえ宗教的なまでにサポートしてます。モーニング娘。の例はホントに面白いです。
　日本では、モー娘。のようなアイドルやタレントは、たくさんの音楽番組やバラエティに出ているので、ファンや視聴者は彼らの楽曲以上に、タレントそのものに魅かれていくようになります。
　もしモーニング娘。がアメリカに来れば、きっと人々の興味は引くでしょうね。かなり目新しいですから。でも日本と同じくらいのテレビ露出がなければ、成功するかどうかはわかりませんね。つまり、日本ではテレビをつければいつでも彼らが出ているということです。
　別の例として、小倉優子がいます。彼女は、偉大な歌手ではないですが、とてもかわいく、人気のあるグラビアアイドルなので、多くのサポートを得ることができます。私は、彼女が好きですが、ファーストシングル「恋のシュビドゥバ」をリリース後、彼女の歌手としてのキャリアはないなと思いました。でも、彼女はユニークなスタイルで何とかやっていくでしょうね。

　また、Jpopではとても若い時期からデビューするアーティストがたくさんいることも特徴だと思います。日本では、11歳や12歳の女の子がアイドルになったりポップスターになるのは珍しいことではないですが、こちらでは非常に珍しいケースだと思います。

70．2004年に発売された日本の曲のなかで、いちばんよかったものはなんですか。

　オリコンの2004年チャートでは平井堅の「瞳をとじて」がナンバーワンで、妻もこれがナンバーワンだといってますが、私は、本当に本当に平原綾香の「Jupiter」が好きでしたね。力強く、こころ動かされる曲で、何ヶ月もの間頭の中で歌い続けてましたね。

71．ここ数年、日本では大きなヒット曲というものがあまり生まれていません。これはどうしてだと思いますか？

　私もこの傾向には気づいてました。90年代中ごろを振り返ってみるとＣＤが一、二百万枚も売れてました。スマップでもない限り不可�#092;ではないとしても、今では非常に珍しいケースでしょう。これにはふたつの要素が絡み合っていると思います。まず、インターネットの普及で音楽が「タダ」で手に入るようになった。また、日本のＣＤ価格を見てみると、決して安くはないわけです。欧米のＣＤ価格が下がっている一方で、日本のアルバムはまだ画一的に「3,058円」なわけで。ＣＤはもっと手に入れやすい価格に見直すべきだと思いますね。

72．今、注目している日本のアーティストは？

　玉置成実ですね。彼女は、ほんと若いですが、偉大なポップシンガーになる可�#092;性を大いに秘めていると思います。しかしながら、Jpopのメインストリームは一夜で変わります。一発屋も珍しくないですし、昨日のスターが今日には消えることもあります。もし、玉置成実がよい歌をリリースし続ければ、それはアニメのテーマ�#092;ングだけでなく、Jpopのメインストリームとなるような歌ですが、彼女はホントによい歌手になると思います。彼女には、Jpopの世界で必要な素晴らしい人格とすばらしいダンス力と歌唱力があります。いい楽曲に恵まれるように期待しましょう。

73．日本の演歌について、興味はありますか？

　あまり詳しくないですね。たぶん、もっと年をとってからでしょう。

74．日本が生み出した文化、カラオケは好きですか？

　好きですねぇ。日本でのカラオケは、特に楽しいですね。ホントにすばらしい�#092;ーシャルコミュニケーションだと思いますよ。大勢の友達が手軽に集い楽しい夜を過ごすことができますから。それに、カラオケボックスはすごい安いですしね。

75．日本語で歌える曲はありますか？

　スマップの「世界に一つだけの花」や河口恭吾の「桜」なんかを歌いますね。もちろん、ハロプロの歌も歌いますよ。

76．日本のHipHopについては、どう思いますか。

　日本のHipHopは、まだまだ発展中といった感じでしょう。私自身は、すごいファンというわけではないですが、多くのHipHopを聞いたことはあります。日本では、HipHopは単なる音楽ではなく、生活やファッションスタイルでもあります。3、4年後には、もっと日本のHipHopはメジャーになると思いますね。原宿や渋谷へ行くとよくわかります。どのお店もHipHopスタイルの洋服を売っていて、多くの若い人たちは、そういったファッションに身を包んでますよね。

77．日本の音楽がアメリカやヨーロッパでは流行しないのは、どうしてだと思いますか？

　難しい質問ですね。K-popやC-popもまた、欧米では人気がありません。私は、Jpopが流行ることはないと思います。日本の文化やトレンドは、世界の至るところまで広がっています。しかし、音楽は、アニメのようにメインストリームにはならないでしょう。トロントでもテレビをつければ、多くの日本の英語の吹き替えアニメを見ることができますが、テレビやラジオで日本の音楽を耳にすることは絶対にないでしょうね。

　大きな理由は、もちろん言語の壁でしょう。欧米では、Jpopのスタイルには慣れていません。宇多田ヒカルが全米で「Exodus」をリリースしましたが、彼女はJpopではなく、アメリカンポップスのように歌おうとしています。これは、彼女が過去にリリースしたJpopからの離別ですね。もし彼女がこれまでのJpopスタイルでリリースした場合、もっと成功するかは疑問ですね。

78．日本では、昨年韓国ブームでしたが、日本以外のアジアの音楽や文化、特にK-popやC-popについてどう思いますか？

　ずっとJpopや日本のカルチャーに浸ってきたので、K-popやC-popについては詳しくないですが、韓国ブームの間に人気が増してきたのは知ってます。「東京湾景」や冬の�#092;ナタのぺ・ヨンジュンを見るにつれ、韓国文化がかなり熱くなってきましたね。

79．ここ数年、日本ではリバイバルブームが続いてますが、それについてどうおもいますか？

　昔の曲がまた日の目を見るのは、良いことだと思います。80年、90年代の中に良い曲はたくさんありますからね。また、多くのJpopアーティストが往年の名曲をリメイクしていることにも注目してます。とっても良いことだと思います。今活躍しているアイドルやアーティストが歌うことで、若い世代の人々も同じ曲を聴く機会を得られるわけですから。Jpopスターは、いつの時代にも自分のオリジナル�#092;ングを持っているべきだとは思いますが、素晴らしいリメイク�#092;ングは、昔の思い出を懐かしむよい機会だと思います。個人的には、市川由衣がリメイクした森高千里の「雨」がお気に入りです。また、今でもたまにレベッカやWink、南野陽子なんかも聞いてますよ。

80．盗作についてよく話題になりますが、それについてどう思いますか？　また、安倍なつみの盗作騒動についてはどう思いますか？

　盗作は最低な行為ですが、クリエイティブなメディアでは常にありえることだと思います。なっちの件はとても不幸でした。彼女は、彼女のキャリアに非常に大きなダメージを与える、大きな過ちをしてしまったと思ってます。また、彼女のマネージメントをする側にも少なからず責任はあると思います。彼らは、こういったことが起きないように、もっと注意するべきだとおもいます。日本は、面子を重んじる国なので、彼女が世間的に許されるまでしばらくかかるでしょうね。

81．ホームページを始めたのはいつですか？

　1996年に「T's Kawaii Jpop Stuff」という名前で立ち上げました。

82．ホームページをはじめたきっかけは？

　私がホームーページを始めた頃は、安室奈美恵や内田有紀、菅野美穂といったアイドルやアーティストをフィーチャーした至極個人的なサイトでした。それから、ウェブサイトは、人々と私の愛するJpopを共有しあうための絶好の手段だと思ったんです。当時の私は、日本以外の国の人々が榎本加奈子や持田真紀を知っていることはないだろうと思ってました。だから、彼女たちを紹介したいと思ったんです。

83．ホームページを開設した後の反響はどうでした？

　訪れた人たちが私の興味があるアイドルやアーティストたちのことを英語で読むことができるので、好評でした。そして、多くのひとたちから感謝のメールをもらいました。それから、欧米人に小倉優子を紹介したいと考え、3年前に初めて小倉優子を特集しました。

84．現在ではどのような方法でサイト運営をなさってますか？

　開設以来、ずっとひとりで運営してます。デザインやコンテンツ同様、テクニカルな面もすべてやってます。ほかに、Jpopの大ファンという人たち数人にボランティアとして協力してもらい、掲示板の管理や、たまに記事なども書いてもらってます。ひとりですべてを運営していくのは、すごい労力と時間がかかりますね。

　Jpop.comの掲示板やフォーラムには、現在10,000人を超えるメンバーが、日々Jpopやアイドル、エンターテイメント、文化そして、言語などについて語り合ってます。そこで、自らの経験や日本に対する「愛」を共有しあっているのです。

86．Jpopファンとして、もっともうれしい瞬間というのはどのようなときですか。

　だれかが、Jpopや日本を楽しむ手助けができればとても幸せですね。また、日本へ行くという人たちにアドバイスをすることも好きですね。

87．Jpopファンとして、もっとも大切なものとはなんでしょう。

　もっとも大切なことは、Jpopを楽しむということでしょうね。すべての異なった種類のアーティストと同じだけ多くのファンがいます。大切なことは、こころを開いて、ファン同士尊敬し合いことですね。それぞれ異なった思考があるでしょうが、結局みんな日本とJpopを愛しているのですから。

88．ホームページはかなりおしゃれなレイアウトですが、ご自身ですべて作ったのですか？

　Jpop.com を作りながら、PHPとmySQLを学びました。大変でしたけど、すごい満足してます。実は、今リニューアルで行き詰っている途中です。個人的な生活とそのほか雑用で数ヶ月サイトのリニューアルから遠ざかってます。でも、出来るだけ早くリニューアルしたいと思ってます。

89．サイトには、色々なコーナーがありますが、簡単にサイト紹介をお願いします。

　サイトで人気あるコーナーは、「Kuri's Korner」です。Kuriはアメリカ人の女の子で、彼女は日本に住んでいて、このコーナーに彼女の体験をいろいろ書いてくれています。また、もっとも活動的なセクションが、登録制になっていてるフォーラムですね。また、訪れた人同士が、友だちやペンパルになったりできるセクションも人気がありますね。新しいデザインでは、Jpopのレビューと日本文化の記事を同じように扱う�#092;定です。

90．Jpop.com radioとはなんですか？

　Jpop.com radioは、ストリーミングを利用して、たまに行なっているラジオショーです。最近のJpopのヒットを伝えたり、CD、DVD、ポスターなどをプレゼントしたりしてます。一番人気があるのは、Jpop.com radio カラオケコンテストです。ウェブサイトの会員がJpopを歌い、リスナーの投票で賞を決めるというものです。イングリッシュスピーカーが、こんなにも上手に日本の歌を歌えるのかと非常に驚きますね。

91．カナダ国内でのJpopの反響や伝えられ方など教えてください。

　残念ながら、カナダではJpopはあまり有名ではないです。テレビでは、非常に多くの日本のアニメが放映されているんですが、音楽のほうはなかなか……。多くの人はまだまだ、日本イコール車と電化製品だと思ってます。

93．日本のテレビは見ますか？　（好きなドラマなど）

　日本のテレビは、いろいろ見ますが特に、ドラマやバラエティを見ますね。「めちゃめちゃイケてるっ！」や「ロンドンハーツ」、「あいのり」、「恋するハニカミ！」がお気に入りです。また、前述したとおり、スポーツやマンガも好きなので、ＴＢＳで放送されている「H2」はいつも見てます。

94．好きな日本の女優は？

　一番好きなのは、矢田亜希子ですね。大きい瞳とすてきな顔を見ると、常にドラマが楽しくなります。また、池脇千鶴と石原さとみは注目の女優だと思いますね。

95．お気に入りの日本のブランドはありますか？

　�#092;ニーですね。常に最先端でハイクオリティの商品を世に贈り続けています。時に、ほかのメーカーのものより高価ですが、それだけの価値はあると思ってます。今は、PSPを買うのをとても楽しみにしてます。PS2が発売されたとき以来の熱い冬になるでしょうね。
